Depending on where you live, you might have spent much of the winter and early spring indoors. Where I live, it was a particularly brutal winter in terms of both cold temperatures as well as snow. It’s time to be outdoors more often now that the weather has gotten warm!
Enjoying the warm weather can not only be fun, but it can also be inexpensive. Here are 10 ways to enjoy the outdoors when it’s nice outside, and do with without spending much money!
Go for a walk or run
Something as simple as going for a walk can be a great way to enjoy the nice weather. I’ve incorporated walking outside 3 or 4 days per week, and it’s a great way to stay limber and counteract the effects of working all day. This can be especially important if you’re sitting most of the time at work.
When the weather is nice, going for a walk or run can be good for the mind and body. And it’s free.
Visit a state or national park
To me, these are completely underrated venues. Some places have great hiking, recreational opportunities, and scenery. Entrance fees are usually quite modest, and can allow for a full day of outdoor fun at a low cost.
Go to the beach
Even here in the Midwest we have beaches! Really, while people on the coasts might laugh, you can enjoy a nice day at the beach on the Great Lakes in the summer. Again, very inexpensive. For those without access to such coastline, how about going for a swim at the pool?
Depending on where you live, there might be opportunities to spend an afternoon picking fruit. I’ve enjoyed blueberry picking, and in the late summer apple picking has become a family tradition. It’s fun to get fresh food directly from the land, as opposed to grocery stores. Somehow it just tastes a bit fresher and more flavorful.
Okay, so maybe you like the idea of picking fruit as I noted above. Perhaps you might even want to grow food on your own property. How about starting a garden, planting some seeds, and getting going? It might even simply be a decorative rather than food-producing garden. Whatever you do, it can be a way to spend time outside working a satisfying project at very little cost if you choose to do it that way.
Play outdoor sports
Sure you might like to walk or run outside. But you can also play basketball, sign up for a softball or volleyball league, or any number of sports outside. Maybe even play some tennis with a friend. I would say golf, which can be a tremendous amount of fun, but I wouldn’t call it frugal. No worries though, as there are other sports you can get involved in.
Attend an outdoor festival or concert
Sometimes these can be quite inexpensive. Locally, there are free outdoor concerts once a week during the summer. While I know that might not be possible everywhere, there are periodic events such as festivals that can also be low-cost and fun while allowing for a fun time outside.
Take up photography
This can be made as expensive or frugal as you want it to be. That being said, if you appreciate pictures, the summer is a great time to take some because it’s easier to be outside comfortably that it would be during cold or wet months.
Sure, you can do this inside. But when the weather is warm and sunny, it can be nice to be outside with a nice book. Add a tasty drink to the mix, and it can be a great way to unwind.
There is something special, for many people, to having some people over and grilling out when the weather is nice. It’s fun, and you can eat relatively inexpensively.
